Poland extends prison for journalist Pablo González until May 29
Pablo González, the Spanish journalist who was arrested on February 28 in Poland accused of spying for Russia, will remain imprisoned until at least May 29. The country's authorities have informed his family of this decision in a letter sent by regular mail and indicate that the provisional prison can be extended for three months, according to 'El País', which has had access to the letter. The reporter is based in Bizkaia, but works from Warsaw and does news coverage of events in Eastern Europe for various media.
The Police arrested González when he was doing a report on the border about refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine. He was immediately taken to the Rzeszów prison. The intelligence services argued that the journalist, the grandson of a son of the war, was spying for the Moscow government. However, no evidence has yet been presented.
The authorities had already anticipated that the provisional prison would be prolonged to avoid the risk of flight. Those close to him believe that the arrest may be due to the fact that Pablo González was born in Moscow in 1982 and was registered there with the name of Pavel, which he later changed when registering in Spain, which would make him appear to have two different identities. Press organizations have demanded his release.
